...Clipper system to bring heavy snow to the Great Lakes today...
...Pacific low pressure system will bring heavy rain and flood potential to northern California today...
...Unsettled weather, with heavy mountain snow, across the West through Wednesday...
The major Nor'easter that impacted the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will continue to move away from the nation today, tracking along the Canadian Maritimes. Gusty winds are expected to persist across the Northeast through the morning hours, then winds will gradually decrease through this evening as the system moves further away.
Meanwhile, a clipper system will swing across the north-central U.S. today, bringing a burst of heavy snow to the Great Lakes region. As the system pushes east tonight into Wednesday, heavy snow will come to an end across the Great Lakes and snow showers will spread into the northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Brisk northwesterly flow on the backside of the system will support lake effect snows downwind of the Great Lakes through Wednesday.
In the West, a slow moving frontal system will produce unsettled weather, with heavy snow in the Cascades and northern Rockies, through Wednesday. An associated area of low pressure and cold front just offshore in the Pacific will direct moisture into northern California, resulting in heavy rain today. Flooding will be possible near steep terrain, especially along the northern Sierra Nevada mountains and adjacent foothills. Precipitation should taper off across California tonight as the low moves onshore and weakens.
The frontal system draped across the Northwest will finally gain momentum during the day on Wednesday as a wave of upper level energy moves overhead. The system will dive southeast across the Plains on Wednesday and towards the Southeast Wednesday night into Thursday. Precipitation chances will accompany the upper level wave, with wintry precipitation for the northern Plains and thunderstorm chances for the Southeast on Thursday.
Well above average temperatures will persist through the work week across most of the western and central U.S. under the influence of an upper level ridge. Below average temperatures will linger along the East Coast today, then temperatures will moderate back to near average on Wednesday. Below average temperatures can also be expected on the backside of the clipper system across the Great Lakes and Northeast Wednesday into Thursday.
